8 Amazing Websites

with Free High-Quality Stock Images

By Dana Tran | Updated: Dec 11 2017

So in no particular order we have…

  1. Visual Hunt
  2. Pixabay
  3. Unsplash
  4. Pexels
  5. Morguefile
  6. Picjumbo
  7. Picalls
  8. LibreStock

1. Visual Hunt

By far, Visual Hunt has the most number of photos compared to the others on the list. Stock photos are also nicely organized by the license type, categories and color. Even though there is the option to register, you do not need an account to search or download photos. The benefit of creating an account is the “like” feature. When you “like” an image, it’ll be saved under your profile so you can reference it at a later date.

Visual Hunt

  • Number of Images: 354,000,000+
  • Search function: Yes – only basic search
  • Images are tagged: Yes
  • Ability to Search or Filter by Media type: No
  • Has Vector Image: Kinda (there are some vector images, but you can’t search, filter or sort)
  • Required to Join to download images: No
  • Cost: Free

2. Pixabay

Even though Pixabay has less than a million images, Pixabay also has free stock videos and advanced search capability. Search and narrow down your results by the media type, the orientation, the category, and color. If that’s still not enough, you can also use advanced operators such as AND, OR< NOT and () to further refine your search results. Just keep in mind that there are some ads on this site for Shutterstock – which isn’t free! Similar to Visual Hunt, you don’t need to register, but if you have an account, you have the added benefit of bookmarking your favorite images for later use!

3. Unsplash

Unsplash is not your typical stock website. It’s more like a photography portfolio website. No vectors, no illustrations or videos, but a lot of beautiful, very high professional photos. In fact, if you click on the information icon for an image, you can see what camera was used to take the pictures, along with the aperture, exposure time, focal length and ISO. There is a basic search option, but I highly recommend checking out the “Collections” to find similar photos.

4. Pexels

Pexels doesn’t have as many images compared to Visual Hunt or Pixabay, but it is another great place to find stock images. They do a great job with categorizing their images by category, popularity, popular searches. They also have a Leaderboard that shows you the most popular photographer. Quite handy if you want to find images with the same look and feel.

They also have a free stock video site! The link is hidden down in the footer, under services. Click here to visit or copy and paste the URL into your browser: https://videos.pexels.com

6. Picjumbo

A photographer/designer created Picjumbo. The quality of the photos on the site is top-notch and categories make images easy to find.  What I find most interesting about Picjumbo is their “Test Drive” feature. If you hover over any of the image thumbnails, you’ll see a test drive icon. When you click on the icon, it’ll take you to a slideshow where you can see the image used as landing page background, as a blog post header or as a background for a quote.

Summary

So, quick recap of the above free stock image websites. All of them are free and you do not need to register in order to search or download images. However, if you create an account, you will have the ability to “save” your favorite images to your profile. A great way to organize your photos without cluttering up your local hard drive or cloud. My three favorites:

  • Unsplash – my personal favorite for high-quality images taken by photographers
  • Visual Hunt – it has the largest number of images
  • Pixabay – the only website with free illustrations and vectors
